As the year comes to a close, most caregivers don’t stop to reflect. They’re too busy keeping everyone else safe, fed, and supported. But taking a few minutes for a personal year-end check-in can be one of the most powerful tools to prevent burnout.
This short, guided self-review can help you understand what’s working, what’s not, and what you need to move into the new year.
- Your Energy & Health
Ask yourself:
- Have I been sleeping well?
- Do I feel exhausted most days?
- Am I getting regular medical check-ups?
- Do I have aches or pains I’ve been ignoring?
Caregivers often put their own health last; until an emergency forces them to stop.
- Your Emotional Well-Being
Reflect on:
- Did I feel supported this year?
- What moments brought me joy?
- What moments overwhelmed me?
- Am I carrying resentment, guilt, or grief?
These emotions are normal, but they’re also signals that support is needed.
- Your Support System
Consider:
- Who helped me this year?
- Who could I ask for more help?
- Where do I need outside support (respite care, meal help, transportation, errands)?
No caregiver should do this alone.
- Your Loved One’s Needs
Think about whether their needs have changed:
- Health declines
- Mobility issues
- Increasing forgetfulness
- More help needed with bathing, dressing, meals, supervision
If responsibilities have grown, your support should too.
- Your Goals for the New Year
Ask yourself:
- What do I want more of next year?
- What do I want less of?
- What boundaries do I need to set?
- What support will help me stay healthy and present?
