July is UV Safety Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to remember that protecting your skin isn’t just important during vacations, it’s an everyday habit that can help prevent long-term health problems.
Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes. While anyone can experience sunburn or skin damage, older adults, young children, and individuals with certain medical conditions may be especially vulnerable. Some medications, including antibiotics, diuretics, and medications used to treat chronic conditions, can also increase sensitivity to sunlight.
Simple Ways to Stay Safe in the Sun
Fortunately, protecting yourself doesn’t require much effort.
- Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before going outdoors.
- Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more often if you’re swimming or sweating.
- Wear lightweight, long-sleeved clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
- Protect your eyes with UV-blocking sunglasses.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated.
- Schedule outdoor activities during the cooler morning or evening hours whenever possible.
Summer Safety for Older Adults
Heat and sun exposure can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and falls. Family members and caregivers should check in regularly with older loved ones, especially during periods of extreme heat.
Watch for signs of:
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Confusion
- Excessive sweating or lack of sweating
- Dark-colored urine
These can all be signs that someone needs to cool down and hydrate immediately.
