Seeing beyond the symptoms: Practical tools for supporting adults with disabilities and behavioral health needs
Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 12:00 pm.
Virtual Webinar.
Direct support professionals working in the homes of adults with disabilities increasingly encounter co‑occurring behavioral, mental health, and substance use challenges that can impact safety, engagement, and quality of care. This webinar will provide evidence‑informed strategies, best practices, and practical tips to help staff recognize when behaviors may be related to underlying mental health or addiction diagnoses, and respond in ways that are supportive, trauma‑informed, and within their scope of practice. Participants will explore how to “see through a different lens” by considering the interaction of disability, trauma, and behavioral health needs, while also addressing common fears and safety concerns associated with entering clients’ homes. By the end of the session, attendees will be better equipped to de‑escalate challenging situations, maintain professional boundaries, and connect individuals and families with appropriate behavioral health resources. This training is supported by the Department of Health and Human Services, Behavioral Health Division.
Presented by Monica McConkey, M.A., licensed professional counselor. This training is supported by HHS, Behavioral Health Division.
