Summary: Before the first astronauts were ever sent into space, mathematicians across the then segregated America were required to problem solve to find the numbers that would ensure a successful space mission. Among these mathematicians, some particularly gifted African American women were able to step up and go against the odds, moving across the country and working around the Jim Crow laws blocking their paths. The efforts of these women greatly contributed to the space race, and propelled the United States forward, eventually ending in victory over the Soviet Union in the Cold War.
