Awareness Saves Lives: Understanding Hepatitis and the Importance of Early Detection

Each year, World Hepatitis Day is observed on July 28 to raise awareness about viral hepatitis and encourage prevention, testing, and treatment.

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver that can be caused by several different viruses, including hepatitis A, B, and C. Many people living with hepatitis have few or no symptoms, making regular screening especially important for those at increased risk.

Common Symptoms

Some people may experience:

  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dark urine
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)

Because symptoms can be mild, or absent altogether, many infections go undiagnosed for years.

Prevention Matters

There are several ways to reduce your risk:

  • Stay up to date on recommended vaccinations for hepatitis A and B.
  • Practice good hand hygiene.
  • Avoid sharing personal items such as razors or toothbrushes.
  • Talk with your healthcare provider about whether hepatitis screening is appropriate for you.

Supporting Healthy Living

Managing chronic health conditions often begins with preventive care. Routine checkups, screenings, and conversations with your healthcare provider can help identify concerns early and improve long-term outcomes.

At Dakota Home Care, we believe education empowers healthier choices. By raising awareness and supporting preventive care, we help individuals remain healthy, independent, and safe at home.

Together, we can build healthier communities, one conversation at a time.
